do i need a partner?

You don’t need a partner as we rotate partners during the classes but it is sometimes good to bring a friend for support when you are attending your first lesson. Most people turn up on their own but dont worry salsa is a great way to meet new people and within no time our friendly group of teachers and dancers will make you feel welcome.

do i need any experience?

No experience is needed. We start off with an absolute beginners class which will nurse you into dancing with a rundown of the main salsa steps, before a one hour beginners class. Remember we all have to start somewhere, even the All Blacks took dance lessons…

what should i wear?

Dress casually. Wear some comfortable shoes you can spin in, bear in mind trainers with too much grip can put strain on your knees and ankles. If you still need some pointers check out our blog post about what to wear to salsa or take a look at the gallery on our homepage!

why salsa?!

Why not?! Its a great way to meet new people through trying something different. You lose 450 calories an hour…

So salsa is also a great way to stay in shape as well as a tool to impress your friends with spins, dips and tricks! At Salsa Dance Leeds we run some fantastic socials, taking over venues with food, drinks and dancing. Its open to anyone, with no special equipment needed…

Finally you will no longer be that person with ‘2 left feet’. Still need a little more persuasion? Take a look at our run down of the 30 reasons to salsa!

is there any parking near the venue?

Parking in the city centre is usually free after 6pm, but check the council website to make absolutely sure you park in the right place as it’s easy to slip up and land a fine.

what kind of music is played?

We play anything from old school Salsa to Beyonce remixes. Salsa music can become infectious and you will be amazed at what you will be able to dance to. We like to keep it cool or funky… Salsa that will hit you in the face and make you want to dance! If you have a favourite, drop us a line and we’ll see what we can do.

Here’s one that we’re really into at the moment…

when should i move up?

Knowing when to move up can be a tricky decision, but we recommend that you move up when you feel comfortable with the moves in the beginners class and can lead them in a social situation. With time those Cuban hips will come, so dont expect to be a pro after a week, everyone develops at a different pace so only you can truely decide what level you are at.
The class fee (£5) entitles you to take part in both classes, so you can always have a feeler of the next class as we don’t put any pressure on you as we know what its like! After all we’ve all been there before and if you want to sneak off halfway through that’s ok. 🙂 But if you really haven’t a clue as to your level come up and ask one of our teachers for guidance.

where else can i dance?

Once you catch the salsa bug you’ll be running round trying to find classes and nights everywhere! But look no further we are here to help you by pointing you in the right direction to some of the best nights in Leeds.
For a night out our favourites are The quarterly Calle Ocho’s and every once in a while we hit up HiFi’s Boogaloo night where we go and kill it on the dancefloor with some Salsa and whatever shapes we feel like bringing out!
